NSR Regional Qualifier Race Report by TriggerMan

Well the NSR Regional Qualifier Races hosted by Scale Auto Racing went off without a hitch. Beginning with the morning practice sessions, it was pretty clear that the NSR Porsche 917K’s and Ford MK IV’s make for VERY GOOD and evenly matched race platforms and right away a number of the cars were clocked in 9.7 second range…there were a few that went even quicker than that. Saturday’s start time was slightly delayed but, once things got rolling hard racing ensued. After working through the first round of heat races most of the drivers settled into a consistently quick pace. Unfortunately, the crash and burn rule took it’s toll early on leaving a few drivers with a lot of work to do. At the end of Saturday’s race, Mr. Consistancy, Frank Marchhart took the top step for the day followed by Larry Edwards who was also consistently quick but, came up short in one heat as he was the last man standing at 7 laps, 1 short of the half way point needed in order to be scored for full points for the heat. Third place went to Ken Brown who was making a welcome return to Scale Auto Racing after being home for the holidays in Daytona Beach, FLA. Jeff Senske and Ken Stevens rounded out the top five with a close points battle. Ken a.k.a The Divine Wind (Japanese translation…Kamikaze!!!) Stevens ran some scary-fast laps with his MK IV posting a 9.437!!! WOW!

Sunday’s race saw a few drivers opting out of the two day event. Sadly (and I truly mean that ) Frank Marchhart, the race 1 winner, decided a day on the golf course was a better option than carrying a sweet new little blue car home. None the less, those that were there will tell you, the gloves were off. Both Jeff Senske and Ken Stevens picked up where they left off Saturday and drove some smokin’ laps. Neither Larry Edwards or Ken Brown could run the pace of Senke and Stevens so, for them it was matter of taking all they could get from each heat race, not getting greedy, staying out of trouble and not chasing something that wasn’t there. It has to be noted that rookie driver Shell Buhrle put together a fine couple of races and his consistency paid off, moving him up the standings. As the race wore on neither Senske, 3^rd overall or Stevens, 4^th overall,  could stop Edwards and Brown from taking 1^st and 2^nd overall respectively. Kasey Hibberts held on for fifth, problems on day one keeping her uncharacteristically out of contention.
